Description

Metrosideros × sub-tomentosa ‘Mistral’ is a dense-growing, evergreen tree featuring a compact, tidy canopy and thick, olive-green foliage. From early to mid-summer, it bursts into a profusion of deep rust-red flowers that attract nectar-loving birds, adding vibrant seasonal interest to the landscape.

A natural hybrid of Metrosideros excelsa and Metrosideros robusta, this cultivar is native to New Zealand and combines the best traits of both parent species. Discovered by Graeme Platt in kānuka/mānuka scrub on the Coromandel Peninsula—specifically in the ranges east of Coromandel township along the road to Te Rerenga—‘Mistral’ is an exceptional selection for its striking floral display and adaptability.

Highly wind-tolerant and resilient, ‘Mistral’ thrives in coastal conditions and is an outstanding choice for use as a screen, specimen, or street tree in urban environments. Its robust form and attractive flowering make it both functional and ornamental in a variety of landscape settings.
