Description
Vitex lucens—pūriri—starts life as a straight, narrow sapling, then matures over decades into a broad-spreading shade tree. Its deep-green, wavy-edged leaves provide year-round lushness. From late autumn through mid-spring, clusters of rosy-pink flowers draw tūī and bellbirds, followed by bright red berries from mid-summer into the next spring that delight kererū. Pūriri shrugs off wind and coastal spray yet tolerates only light frosts, remaining evergreen and uniquely of Aotearoa.
