Description

Leptospermum scoparium ‘Wiri Joan’—a mānuka cultivar raised by Jack Hobbs at Auckland Regional Botanic Gardens in the late 20ᵗʰ century—forms a compact, bushy mound of tiny, bright-green leaves. Through winter its fat buds promise colour, then in spring the shrub is smothered for weeks in vivid red, double flowers. Because it sets almost no seed, ‘Wiri Joan’ stays neat and low-maintenance. Hardy in sunny, well-drained ground, this evergreen beauty delivers reliable brilliance in gardens across Aotearoa New Zealand and the southeastern Australian states where mānuka naturally occurs.
