Description
The purple boxelder, Acer negundo var. violaceum, offers a captivating display of color throughout the season. Its bare winter branches are adorned with striking burgundy tassels before the spring flush of purple-maroon young shoots and leaves. These mature to green in summer, eventually turning golden in autumn. Small, attractive pink-purple flowers appear in early to mid-spring. This deciduous tree thrives in full sun and sheltered locations, and while its seeds are toxic to horses, it exhibits good tolerance for air pollution, drought, and temporary waterlogging once established.
