Description
The ‘Burgundy’ sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Burgundy’) is a selected deciduous cultivar with a narrower, pyramidal shape in its youth that broadens as it matures. It features larger maple-shaped leaves that emerge earlier in the season compared to other sweetgum varieties. In autumn, its foliage transforms into a rich, red-burgundy colour that persists well into winter, offering extended seasonal interest. ‘Burgundy’ is known for its reliable autumn colour across various climates and is a popular choice as a street tree. Like the species, it develops a taproot in dry soils for better wind resistance, but in wetter soils, its root system remains shallow, making it less tolerant of strong winds. The parent species, Liquidambar styraciflua, is native to central and eastern United States and Central America.
