Description

The ‘Gumball’ sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Gumball’) is a distinctive deciduous cultivar with a dense, rounded ball-shaped growth habit. Its maple-shaped leaves transform into brilliant shades of purple, orange, yellow, and red in the autumn, often persisting well into winter for extended seasonal interest. This cultivar is an excellent choice as a street tree or for formal plantings and has the advantage of not producing seed capsules. However, like the species, its root development is influenced by soil moisture: in dry soil, it forms a taproot for wind resistance, while in wetter soil, its roots remain shallow, reducing wind tolerance. The parent species, Liquidambar styraciflua, is native to central and eastern United States and Central America.
