Description
The ‘Shirotae’ Japanese flowering cherry (Prunus serrulata ‘Shirotae’) is a strong-growing deciduous tree with a distinctive wide-spreading, flat-top form and tiered, horizontal branches that can grow as wide as the tree is tall. In mid-spring, it produces abundant, large, fragrant, pure-white, semi-double flowers that emerge from white buds, sometimes with a hint of pink. The serrated green leaves turn attractive shades of yellow, red, and orange in autumn. Its broad, flat-top habit makes ‘Shirotae’ an excellent choice as a shade tree. This cultivar originated in Japan in the 19th century.
