Description
In mid-spring, Magnolia × loebneri ‘Leonard Messel’ is covered in numerous deep lilac buds that open into soft lilac-pink flowers with white interiors. These blooms can reach up to 12cm in diameter and feature as many as 12 tepals. This cultivar begins flowering at a young age and is an excellent choice for a street tree. Magnolia × loebneri is a deciduous hybrid between Magnolia kobus and Magnolia stellata, first produced before 1914 by Max Löbner in Pillnitz, Dresden, Germany. Magnolia × loebneri ‘Leonard Messel’ was developed by James Comber, the head gardener at the Nymans garden in West Sussex, England, and named in honor of Leonard Messel, the owner of the Nymans estate at the time. It was registered in 1955.
