Description
The red-striped maple (Acer capillipes) is a distinctive deciduous tree, forming an elegant vase-like shape. Its new stems are a striking red, contrasting beautifully with its mature bark, which displays unique green and white stripes. Autumn brings a spectacular display as its leaves transform into vibrant orange and scarlet hues. While native to the islands of Honshū, Kyūshū, and Shikoku in Japan, it can thrive in Christchurch gardens with moist, well-drained soil and partial shade, especially in warmer locations. Its tolerance of air pollution also makes it a suitable choice for urban environments.
