Description
The ‘Armstrong’ red maple (Acer rubrum ‘Armstrong’) is a deciduous tree notable for its slender, columnar growth habit, making it well-suited for avenues, streets, and berm plantings. In autumn, its foliage typically turns yellow-orange, though it can develop a rich-red coloration under favorable environmental conditions. This cultivar also features small, red flowers in early to mid-spring. While it thrives in moist, well-drained soil and full sun, it demonstrates adaptability to a wide range of soil types, including sandy, heavy clay, peat, dry, and poorly draining soils. Additionally, ‘Armstrong’ is cold-hardy and tolerant of windy conditions. It is a hybrid of the North American native red maple (Acer rubrum) and silver maple (Acer saccharinum), selected in the United States in 1951.
