Description
The ‘Columnare’ red maple (Acer rubrum ‘Columnare’) is a deciduous tree distinguished by its upright, columnar form, making it an ideal selection for planting along avenues and in narrow spaces. It is known for its brilliant orange-red autumn foliage, providing a striking display. This cultivar is also quick-growing and produces small, red flowers in early to mid-spring. While it thrives in moist, well-drained soil and full sun, it demonstrates adaptability to a range of soil types, including sandy, heavy clay, peat, dry, and poorly draining soils. Additionally, ‘Columnare’ is cold-hardy and tolerant of windy conditions. Its origin is unknown, but it was documented in the United States in 1894.
