Description

Beilschmiedia tarairi, commonly known as taraire, is a stately evergreen tree native to the North Island of New Zealand. It grows tall and upright, with smooth brown bark and distinctive new shoots covered in fine, brown hairs.

Its broad, olive-green leaves are glossy, leathery, and deeply veined, giving the tree a bold and textured appearance. Taraire prefers moist, well-drained soils and is tolerant of light to moderate frosts, making it well-suited to sheltered forest and garden settings.

In autumn, it produces large purple berries that are highly attractive to native wood pigeons (kererū), supporting biodiversity and seed dispersal. With its elegant form and ecological value, Beilschmiedia tarairi is an excellent addition to native plantings and forest restoration projects.
