Description
Beilschmiedia tawa, commonly known as tawa, is a slow-growing but long-lived evergreen tree native to New Zealand. Over time, it can become a towering presence in the forest canopy, admired for its graceful form and longevity.
Tawa grows with a tall, upright structure and is clad in distinctive, almost black bark. Its slender, willowy leaves are a soft pale green and hang delicately from the branches, giving the tree an elegant, airy appearance.
In winter, tawa produces large, purple berries that are a favourite food source for New Zealand’s native wood pigeons (kererū), making it ecologically valuable as well as ornamental.
