Description
Betula nigra, commonly known as River Birch, is a deciduous tree well-suited for moist environments. It exhibits a strong pyramidal growth habit. The bark provides year-round interest, displaying a range of colors as the tree matures. Young trees feature peeling bark in shades of pink to orange-brown, which exfoliates to expose a lighter cream-white inner bark. As the tree ages, the outer bark transitions to red to grey-brown and can eventually become almost black. The leaves are a glossy green with a whitish (glaucous) underside, turning a bright yellow in the autumn.
