Description

Dysoxylum spectabile—commonly called kohekohe or New Zealand mahogany (formally Didymocheton spectabilis, though the older name persists in local use)—grows upright with an elegant frame of large, glossy green leaflets. Well adapted to windy coastal sites, it nonetheless demands fertile, free-draining soil and shelter from frosts. From early autumn into mid-winter the tree releases sweetly fragrant panicles of white blossoms, adding seasonal interest to its evergreen canopy. Endemic to Aotearoa, kohekohe pairs striking good looks with a tolerance for salt-laden breezes—provided its roots stay nourished and its crown stays frost-free.
