Description
Metrosideros excelsa, commonly known as pōhutukawa, is a hardy, evergreen tree native to New Zealand, renowned for its resilience and striking floral display. Thriving in coastal conditions, it tolerates poor soils, wet areas, and periods of drought, making it exceptionally adaptable to challenging environments.
It forms a large, broad-headed canopy with thick, dark green leaves and attractive silver-grey undersides, contributing to its year-round visual appeal. From early to mid-summer, Metrosideros excelsa bursts into a brilliant display of crimson-red flowers, drawing in nectar-seeking birds and adding vibrant seasonal colour to the landscape.
Highly versatile in form, it can be pruned to create hedges or screens, or left to develop naturally as a bold specimen tree. Its toughness and beauty make it a staple in both coastal and urban plantings.
