Description
Metrosideros excelsa ‘Vibrance’ is a striking cultivar selected for its more upright, dense, and compact growth habit. As tough and resilient as the traditional pōhutukawa, this form is especially well-suited for suburban gardens and urban plantings, where space and structure are important.
From early to mid-summer, ‘Vibrance’ puts on a dazzling display of exceptionally large, vibrant red flowers that attract nectar-feeding birds and provide a burst of colour in the landscape. Its foliage features rich green leaves with attractive silver-grey undersides, adding further ornamental interest year-round.
This cultivar was discovered near the coast at Waiomu on the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand. It was John Dodsworth-Smith who first brought attention to the original tree, and around 1985, Graeme Platt collected cutting material to preserve and propagate the cultivar. Today, ‘Vibrance’ stands out as an excellent street tree and a standout feature in modern garden design.
