Description
The New Zealand kauri, Agathis australis, presents a unique growth pattern. While mature trees are known for their expansive size, young kauri maintain a slender, pyramidal form, making them suitable for smaller gardens for a time. These young trees require sheltered locations, protected from frost and wind, and consistent moisture for successful establishment. Once mature, however, they demonstrate increased resilience, tolerating light frosts and heavier clay soils. The tree’s foliage transitions from a bronze hue in its youth to a mature green, and it retains its evergreen character. Flourishing in moist, well-drained soil, this iconic species is native to the northern regions of New Zealand’s North Island.
