Description
The London plane tree (Platanus x acerifolia) is a fast-growing deciduous tree that develops into a large, round-headed specimen. It is easily recognized by its smooth, mottled bark that characteristically peels off in large flakes. Featuring large, palmate leaves, it is a popular choice for expansive lawns, parks, avenues, and streets. This robust tree tolerates heavy pruning and can survive challenging conditions such as poor soil, limited moisture, and pollution. In autumn, its leaves turn a yellow-orange, providing attractive fall foliage. The London plane is a hybrid, believed to have originated around 1670, resulting from a cross between the Oriental plane (Platanus orientalis) and the American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis).
