Description

The ‘Pyramidalis’ London plane tree (Platanus x acerifolia ‘Pyramidalis’) is a deciduous cultivar known for its tidier and more erect growth habit compared to the standard London plane. Its symmetrical, pyramidal shape makes it well-suited for tighter spaces, as well as for lining avenues and streets. In autumn, its large, palmate leaves turn a lovely yellow-orange. Like the parent species, it is a hybrid of the Oriental plane (Platanus orientalis) and the American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis), with the hybrid potentially originating around 1670. ‘Pyramidalis’ itself was apparently developed or first distributed in France or Belgium and was introduced to Britain around 1850.
