Description
The ‘Kanzan’ Japanese flowering cherry (Prunus serrulata ‘Kanzan’) is a deciduous tree known for its showy spring blossoms. Young trees exhibit a narrow, erect, vase-shaped habit that broadens with maturity. In mid to late-spring, it produces abundant, large, fully-double, pink flowers held in attractive drooping clusters, opening from deep-pink buds. The emerging bronze leaves provide a lovely contrast to the flowers. Autumn brings another display as the foliage turns vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow. ‘Kanzan’ is a popular choice for lining avenues and driveways and is recognized as one of the more wind-hardy flowering cherry varieties. It was developed in Japan during the Edo period (1603-1867).
